Active components of plants, depending on their molecular structure, are efficiently extracted into different solvents, most often, either alcohol or water. The arrival of acetone in the modern world has replaced alcohol because it is far more efficient (though for more toxic if used improperly) at extracting active components from plants. Impurities in alkaloid extractions are efficiently removed by another modern-day arrival called Naptha. The downside: both of these liquids are extremely flammable and poisonous if ingested. They are extremely volatile, but purification through distillation is absolutely essential.
