Solubility of Active Components – Quick Guide
- by Anonymous

Active components of plants, depending on their molecular structure, are efficiently extracted into different solvents, most often, either alcohol or water.  The arrival of acetone in the modern world has replaced alcohol because it is far more efficient (though for more toxic if used improperly) at extracting active components from plants.  Impurities in alkaloid extractions are efficiently removed by another modern-day arrival called Naptha.  The downside: both of these liquids are extremely flammable and poisonous if ingested.  They are extremely volatile, but purification through distillation is absolutely essential.  That being said, this list is for educational purposes only; extraction of most of these sacred compounds illegal in the United States:

Traditionally extracted into water:

  • AMANITA MUSCARIA – Fly Agaric – 190 degree water for 45 minutes - active component is muscimole (5-aminomethyl-3-OH-isoxazole), active in an oral dose of about 10 mg.  Listed as a poison by the FDA.
  • BANISTERIOPSIS - Ayahuasca - cold or hot water for 1 hour to 3 days - active components are MAO inhibitors important for preventing the breakdown of alkaloids in the stomach

Traditionally extracted into alcohol:

  • SALVIA DIVINORUM – Diviner's Sage  – 1 week in alcohol - active component is salvinorin a - active in vaporized dose of 1 mg, chewed dose of 7-10 mg.
  • TRICHOCEREUS TERSCHECKII - San Pedro - 1 week in alcohol - active component is mescaline - active in oral dose of about 14 grams of dried material.  Mescaline is illegal in most parts of the world.
