Music: I never thought I would be an Echo & the Bunnymen fan. I always used to laugh at their name. But, after reading more and more about them, I decided to check out this album, "Ocean Rain." The album begins with the languid "Silver" and ends with the swirling title track, and between it all is one of the most original sounding albums I have ever heard. It is like Echo picked up where The Beatles and The Doors left off, and added some New Wave texturing and in the midst of it all, created their own sound. From the first listen, you will feel like you've heard it before, but never heard anything quite like it. It's often bizarre in its orchestral instrumentation and themes. It sounds like Alice In Wonderland on one big drug trip. Echo defies rationality to make this a howling, dark, engaging master stroke. I could go on and on about everysong. The important thing is that no one before or since has made an album that sounds quite like "Ocean Rain." Sure, some of Siouxsie and the Banshees' and Depeche Mode's stuff of the same time period may sound similar. But none can compare to the swirling, mystical nature of Echo and the Bunnymen's masterpiece, "Ocean Rain."

LOVES A LONG SONG is a great collection of psychedic-tinged art rock that takes a lot of influence from 90's bands like Mercury Rev and Air as well as past bands like early 70's Pink Floyd. These guys know how to craft songs, the arrangements are very creative, and the mix is wonderful. A definate treat for those with higher-end sound systems. This is the kind of album that a fan of almost anything would like, and I expect that by the end of this decade, King Black Acid will be known as one of the heavy-hitters in the music world. Even though they have a few albums to their credit, I believe this one is the start of something big. -Mason

Music: Shankar (a different Shankar) shows himself on this recording to be a master of both composition and his instrument -- a custom-made, double necked, 10-string violin capable of covering the range from violin to cello. Accompannied by Indian percussion masters Zakir Hussain on tabla and Vikku Vinayakram on ghatam, he takes the listener on an amazing, nearly 1-hour journey into the heart and soul of Indian classcal music. In his hands, the violin sings with the voice of divine inspiration, articulating more than a melody as it nudges and pulls our minds along on its journey. The effect of his vocalizing along with his instrument is absolutely transporting.
